Fields Medalist Professor Ngô Bảo Châu Joins HKU as Chair Professor
HKU welcomes Professor Ngô Bảo Châu, recipient of the 2010 Fields Medal, to join the Department of Mathematics under the Faculty of Science, commencing June 2026. Professor Ngô earned global recognition for his groundbreaking proof of the fundamental lemma in the Langlands Programme, a monumental achievement that solved a three-decade-old mathematical challenge and was named one of Time magazine's Top 10 Scientific Discoveries of 2009.

HKU Physicists Awarded 2025 Brillouin Medal for Discovery in Phononics
Professor Nicholas X. Fang, Global STEM Scholar and Jockey Club (JC) STEM Lab Director in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Professor Xiang Zhang, HKU President and Vice-Chancellor, and Chair of Physics in the Department of Physics, have been jointly awarded the 2025 Brillouin Medal by the International Phononics Society (IPS). The honour recognises their pioneering discovery of ultrasonic metamaterials with negative elastic modulus.
